Project Description:

Agricultural businesses tend to struggle with large sets of financial information and spreadsheets. It can be difficult to track a businesses' projected success through numbers alone, so our team worked with  AgBiz Logic™  and built visualizations to better inform farmers how their data looks over a ten year period.

AgBiz Logic™ is a website designed for farmers and small-scope agricultural businesses and provides a variety of tools designed to help with financial problems associated with those businesses. Our project focused on the financial tool within the AgBiz Logic™ suite, which is focused on representing the financial data input by agricultural businesses so it can be stored and displayed in an organized fashion. Our project expanded on the tool by generating visualizations in the form of graphs to represent the data displayed in the tables already existing within the page.

The project allows users to select dropdowns to access visualizations of popular items, such as operating expenses, or to be able to customize their visualizations. The implementation of the user interface was designed with the intent that if a user wanted to search for an item in the data tables that they wanted visualized, they could scroll back to the custom visualization, find the category of choice, and select to display it. The visualizations are stored within dropdowns as well to reduce space on the page, so the user can focus on the data tables if they are looking for a single piece of information.

Our project used a combination of d3.js, a popular Javascript package, as well as standard Javascript to build visualizations appended to svg elements created with HTML. In order to allow the visualizations to be used across other pages, our team factored the functions generating the custom line graphs and stacked bar charts into a service, allowing the visualizations to be used within other pages across the entire AgBiz Logic™ site.
