The Dendrometer Improvements project is focused on evaluating the improved dendrometer designed by the Openly Published Environmental Sensing (OPEnS) Lab for usability. A dendrometer is a device used to measure the dimensions and characteristics of trees and other plants while taking in water. This kind of device contributes towards reduction of water waste to conserve the precious resource in our changing world. The improved dendrometer was the product of a mechanical capstone team whose goal was to create a second iteration of the device. The new dendrometer had improved stability, accuracy, and weatherability.

Our industrial engineering focus assisted the lab in evaluating the improved dendrometer for usability and creating succinct manuals for user processes (such and installation and maintenance) and manufacturing of the dendrometer. Research, meetings with OPEnS Lab staff, and hands-on testing all contributed to the creation of these manuals. The resulting manuals incorporate findings from research to improve user comprehension and increase the efficiency of installation and manufacturing. For example, clearer language in procedure and addition of images corresponding to the steps were included to the manuals to aid with the increase in efficiency. Manuals were reviewed by various stakeholders to ensure accuracy.
