Project Description: 

This capstone project is focused on creating a new Digital Imaging Correlation (DIC) camera mounting system for Dr. Kawasaki and her material science graduate students. DIC is a method of determining displacement fields on a loaded sampling’s surface [2]. This measurement tool is required to obtain the engineering stress and strain curve because the sample sizes for their research are too small to measure using an extensometer.

The team has designed a camera mounting system that is both mobile and rigid, which allows for variability with testing parameters while maintaining image quality. The design features motion in the x, y, and z directions, which enables the operator to place cameras and lights anywhere in relation to the tensile testing sample. By implementing a new method of z-axis travel, the cameras can be removed from the testing area without negating the calibration that proceeds every test. This in turn allows for easy sample placement into the tensile tester. 

The results of the capstone team’s effort is a product that increases the functionality of the tensile testing machine, while not reducing the quality of the testing results. The team designed a product that allows the user to perform operations at an accelerated rate compared to the original camera mounting methods. Additionally, the product was designed, such that the user can remove the entire system from the tensile tester when not in use.
