Project Description:

Welcome to MIME 608! Our team has been tasked with developing wood stove retrofits, designed for use in low-income households to increase heat output into the room. The team aimed to develop several retrofits, at a low cost, and test to see if any were viable options.

The team settled on 3 separate retrofit concepts, of which further development was completed, including simulations and testing. The three concepts developed were a concentric tube heat exchanger, exterior fins and a heat spreader. The team secured access to Aprovecho Research Center, who graciously donated testing space and equipment for the team’s use. All retrofits were tested on a propane burner versus a plain chimney, and raw data was collected.

Following the testing, the data collected was compared to simulated values to assess test successfulness. The team was then able to come to initial conclusions regarding the effectiveness of the retrofits.
